SYLLABLES   &  SYLLABIC WORDS     

    SYLLABLE : Every word is made from syllables.Breaking words into syllables can often help with pronunciation.

   DEFINITION : A Syllable is a unit of pronunciation having one vowel sound .
        *A Syllable is a group of letters that forms a pronunciation unit.    TYPES  : [1] Open Syllable [2] Closed Syllable [3] R-Controlled Syllable 
                   [4] Vowel Team Syllable  [5] Silent- e (VCe ) Syllable [6] C-le syllable .
  
 [1] Open Syllable : * An open syllable has only one Vowel. 
                                 *The Vowel is the last letter of the Syllable. 
                              *The Vowel has a long Sound [ like the 'i' in line. ]
                          * Open syllable have no more than one Consonant
                            between the open syllable and the next Vowel .  
      FORM  : Open Syllable's Vowel +Consonant+Vowel of next syllable
  EXAMPLE : ba-by, cu- pid, fe- male,fro- zen, i- vy,
  
 [2] Closed Syllable : * A Closed syllable has only one Vowel. 
                               *The Vowel has a short Sound [like the 'i' in mill. ]
      (I)If the word is only 2 letters, it must end with a Consonant.

              FORM  : Vowel + Consonant
                EXAMPLE : -At, in , it, of, on,
     (II) If the word is more than 3 letters , a Closed syllable has 1 consonant before the vowel                    and 1 or more consonants after the Vowel.
              FORM  : Consonant + Vowel + 1 or more Consonants
             EXAMPLE : bark, cat, catch, net, 
     (III)  If a word has 2 Closed Syllables next to each other ,there will be two Consonant between the Vowels.
               FORM  : Cons +Vowel +Cons+Cons +Vowel+ Cons             
               EXAMPLE : win- ter, sum- mer, com- mon, tem- per,  

 [3] R-Controlled Syllable  :
       (I)  A vowel, diphthong, triphthong that has an "R" or a "RE"after it.['R'with a silent 'E' ]
                 FORM  : Vowel / Diphthong / Triphthong + R / RE . 
                 EXAMPLE :care, deer, fire, worth, whis-per, 
       (II)R-Controlled vowels are usually pronounced in a different way because they are "Controlled" by the "R".
              **ER, UR & IR Vowels sound like the "ER" in "HER".
                    FORM  :Consonant +er/ur/ir
                   EXAMPLE : per,fur, her, birth, hurt,shirt,
         (III)  Some "AR" vowels sound like the "AR' in "FAR" .
                      FORM  : Consonant  + ar
                      EXAMPLE  : car,far, par, star,
          (IV) Other "AR" or "AIR" vowels sound like the "AR" in "SHARE".
                       FORM  : Consonant +ar /air
                       EXAMPLE : hare,stare,hair, pair,
           (V) "OR" vowels sound like the "OR" in "FOR"
                        FORM : Consonant+ or
                        EXAMPLE : or, for, door, floor,   

[4] Vowel Team Syllable  : * A group of 2 to 4 letters ,usually Vowels, which make
                                             a single vowel sound.
                FUN FACT : Vowels teams are usually old words whose pronunciation changed over                               long periods of time .They are only learned through practice and recognition.
           (I) If a vowel team is made of 2 Vowels ,usually only the first Vowel is pronounced.                          EXAMPLE : clean,fail, rain,suit,
          (II) A Vowel team can create a long or short Vowel sound .
                          EXAMPLE  : Bread, feel, look, toast, saw, wear,  
          (III) If a Vowel team syllable has a Consonant in it , the Vowel is usually pronounced differently from normal Vowels.
                        EXAMPLE  : Loud, sound, walk, though, tight, straw, te-di-ous .

[5] Silent- e (VCe ) Syllable : The silent-e  syllable consists of a Vowel, followed by a Consonant, followed by an "e"that is silent. 
         ** The silent-e  syllable is also called VCe, which stands for Vowel- Consonant-e.[ VCe].
         ** It's usually the last syllable in a root word.
        ** The Vowel has a long sound [ like the "I" in LINE. ]
          FORM  : Vowel + Consonant + e
        EXAMPLE : cake, take, line, tone, tune, theme, ex-ile,     

 [6] C-le syllable  : The C-le syllable consists of a Consonant followed by an "le."
            **The C-le syllable is also called the Consonant-le .
            **It's usually the last syllable in a root word.
     (I) If the word ends with "CKLE", it is divided right before the "LE"         EXAMPLE :  Buck-le, freck-le, tick-le, tack-le, 
    (II) If the word ends with 'le' other than 'ckle',it is divided 1 letter before the 'le'.
             * Here the letter before the 'le' is a Consonant.
          EXAMPLE : ap-ple, fa-ble, ta-ble, rum-ble,
     (III) Sometimes the letter before the 'le'is a vowel.
            EXAMPLE : sale, scale, file, tile, 

***SYLLABIC ANALYSIS : Syllabic Analysis is the act of breaking multi-syllabic words into syllables and then using phonics and analogies to decode the words ,syllable by syllable.
 Examples of Syllabic Analysis are : bio-de-grad-able   cul-prit,   neg-a-tive,  sea-weed, 
  tem-por-ary, vic-tor-y,

 TYPES :Syllabic Words are divided into following catagories:-
[1] MONO SYLLABIC WORD : A word that consists of a single Syllable is called Mono Syllabic Word .
       EXAMPLE : NOUN, MAN,DOG,
[2] DI SYLLABIC  WORD A word having Two  Syllables is called Di Syllabic Word .
EXAMPLE : PRO--NOUN
** MULTI-SYLLABIC WORD : Multi-syllabic word is a word which consists of more than two syllables.
[3] TRI SYLLABIC WORD  A word with Three Syllables  is called Tri Syllabic Word .
EXAMLPE : AD--JEC--TIVE
[4] TETRA SYLLABIC WORD A word having Four  Syllables  is called Tetra Syllabic Word .
 EXAMPLE : PRE--PO--SI--TION
[5] PENTA SYLLABIC WORD A word having Five  Syllables  is called Penta Syllabic Word .
EXAMPLE : EX--A--MI--NA--TION, U-NI-VER-SI-TY, IN-DI-VI-DU-AL, CLA-SSI-FI-CA-TION,
[6] POLLY SYLLABIC WORD  A word having more than Five Syllables  is called Polly
